BILLERICA MATH

A website for mathematics in the Billerica Public Schools

High School

Recent mathematics events at BMHS:

· On October 18, a team of four BMHS students participated in the 19th Annual WPI Invitational Mathematics Meet in Worcester.  The team consisted of seniors Anthony Kelley, Mollie Murnane, and Kory Wood, and junior Maxwell Zeller.  With 84 teams participating, Billerica fell just outside of the top 15, in the range from 16-27, ahead of such schools as Burlington High School and Westford Academy.  Click here to see the team results.  Kory Wood was the top scorer for Billerica, and received a $1,000 scholarship to WPI.

· On October 24, twelve BMHS students attended the Boston University Mathematics Field Day on the BU campus in Boston.  During the day, students heard two lectures from BU professor Robert L. Devaney, one on Chaos Games and Movies and another on the Exploding Julia Set.  In between, they were treated to a lecture from Curtis McMullen from Harvard University, who was a recipient of the Fields Medal in 1998.  Professor McMullen spoke about the recent work of Grigori Perelman to prove the Poincaré Conjecture, which had remained an unsolved problem since 1904.

· On both October 20 and October 28, BMHS students attended the UMass Lowell TEAMS Academy, a program for academically advanced high school sophomores who were able to experience a variety of college-level science workshops co-taught by university and high school faculty.  Between the two days, a total of 20 BMHS students attended, and experienced mini-courses in Alternative Energy, Assistive Technology, and either Criminal Science Investigation or Robotics.

Upcoming events:

· On February 6, approximately 170 BMHS students will be participating in the AMC10 and AMC12 competitions.  These are national competitions given each spring, and any students who score over 120 on the AMC10 or 100 on the AMC12 automatically advance to take the American Invitational Mathematics Examination (AIME).  Last year, Billerica had twelve students qualify for the AIME test:
